Thanks for getting back to me. I've already tried the linux26 option; it had the same results. I have not had any luck with the CD drive in this machine with linux (except for booting from it, as per original report)... I haven't tried KNOPPIX; I probably won't take the time to download it unless you tell me it's essential to the troubleshooting process. If so, I'll get right to it.
I used the exact same CD (20040530 sarge-i386-netinst) to install to a Gateway today, so there must be something about that IBM's drive.
