Thanks for getting back to me.  I've already tried the linux26 option; it
had the same results.  I have not had any luck with the CD drive in this
machine with linux (except for booting from it, as per original report)... I
haven't tried KNOPPIX; I probably won't take the time to download it unless
you tell me it's essential to the troubleshooting process.  If so, I'll get
right to it.

I used the exact same CD (20040530 sarge-i386-netinst) to install to a
Gateway today, so there must be something about that IBM's drive.  What
should I look for?

Can you boot with the linux26 option to see if kernel 2.6 finds the CD
drive.  Can you try something like KNOPPIX and see if that works?
Have you been able to use the CD in that machine under Linux before?
