Windows' bootloader just needs the first linux' or grub's bootsector (512 octets) as a file (I suspect this may also be the case for other bootloaders). Extracting this bootsector to a file using "dd" needs just a few commands, but dangerous commands with wizard-parameters. See: <http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Linux+NT-Loader-5.html> I think the installer could help a bit to do this, through a new menu item: "Copy the bootsector to a file". This item could be for instance automatically triggered after the "grub-step" if and only if the user did NOT choose an MBR. Ideally, mounting a windows VFAT partition (or even NTFS, depending on the kernel) should also be easy from the installer. -- System Information Debian Release: 3.0 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux fcat 2.4.21-5-686 #1 Sun Aug 24 15:25:33 EST 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=fr_FR.ISO-8859-1, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.ISO-8859-1 --------------------------------------- Received: (at 235019-done) by bugs.debian.org; 11 Jun 2004 19:17:49 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Jun 11 12:17:49 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from kitenet.net [64.62.161.42] (postfix) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BYrXB-0004ra-00; Fri, 11 Jun 2004 12:17:49 -0700 Received: from dragon.kitenet.net (216-98-91-136.access.naxs.com [216.98.91.136]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "Joey Hess", Issuer "Joey Hess" (verified OK)) by kitenet.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7FBD318628 for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Fri, 11 Jun 2004 19:17:48 +0000 (GMT) Received: by dragon.kitenet.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 441B56EC36; Fri, 11 Jun 2004 15:17:39 -0400 (EDT) Date: Fri, 11 Jun 2004 15:17:39 -0400 From: Joey Hess <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: closing Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="0F1p//8PRICkK4MW" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6+20040523i Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-3.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00 autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: --0F1p//8PRICkK4MW Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I don't think this is worth implementing; the installer now detects windows and other OSes and adds them to the grub boot menu automatically which will be much nicer for most users than some manual windows boot loader setup. --=20 see shy jo --0F1p//8PRICkK4MW Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: Digital signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAygVSd8HHehbQuO8RAlH6AKDMfsz8f7LDJXz2IhwPF5iVZtGTRQCfTliE z1C32WpOMQL9DWEQLi+q1Bk= =9cBA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --0F1p//8PRICkK4MW-- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
