After you've made an installation with 2.4, can you install the 2.6
package and check if you see similar problems?
 

Do you mean to upgrade the kernel to 2.6 or to try to reinstall Sarge 
using the linux26 option?

I still need to figure out how to complete the installation with 2.4. It 
has a PCMCIA wireless LAN card (a Linksys WPC11) that I need to figure 
out how to get the installer to recognize.
