Correct, you should not use this package on your system. The package is used exclusively to have SATA-support in the new Debian Installation system for Sarge. If you want SATA modules for your current system, you should probably just get a kernel-image package that is suitable for your system. If the kernel-version contains SATA support, the SATA kernel modules will probably be part of that package. Alternatively, you could build your own kernel from the kernel-source package (take a look at the package 'kernel-package').
