I'm trying to get into the habit of using netcat for that instead. I like using the harden-* packages, and harden-clients conflicts with telnet. I can install telnet-ssl to get around that, but given I'm never actually using the TELNET protocol, I'm just using telnet to connect to arbitrary ports, I figure I might as well use netcat and be done with it...
