As suggested by Joey Hess below, disabled hotplug (by moving the S40hotplug file
from /etc/rcS.d to root directory, for now) and on next reboot reached "Welcome
to your new Debian system" screen.

Many thanks to Joey Hess, whose politeness, patience and knowledge is much
appreciated. Please contact me if/when a potential fix for this bug is made, so
that I can test for it.

Sounds like it's probably one of those hardware watchdog modules that
hotplug has recently incorrectly begun to load. They reboot the machine
if they do not hear from the watchdo daemon, which you do not have
installed. Try disabling hotplug, and see if that fixes it.
