When I have to plug into a wired network, I use a USB-Ethernet adapter. I have a few, the one I used for this install was an SMC adapter, here's the lsusb output: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0707:0201 Standard Microsystems Corp. (lsusb -v output can be supplied if desired, but it's really verbose). So when it came to detecting the network hardware, I was presented with a list of adapters. I switched to the second virtual terminal and modprobed the pegasus module, and switched back to the first virtual terminal, and selected "none of the above", and opted not to load a module from a driver disk. I then got a red screen saying that no network device had been detected. Upon acknowledging this error message, I was told that the installer was trying to configure the network using DHCP, which was successful, and the install continued as normal. I've already filed a wishlist bug (#262638) against ethdetect with a better-than-nothing way of avoiding having to manually modprobe the pegasus driver. I think the pegasus chipset is the most common USB-Ethernet adapter chipset, so this is going support the majority of USB-Ethernet adapters out there. Oh, and I was asked about a HTTP proxy twice, once when the normal APT source lines were updated, and once before the security APT source was updated. --------------------------------------- Received: (at 267402-close) by bugs.debian.org; 6 Sep 2004 21:53:11 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Sep 06 14:53:11 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from newraff.debian.org [208.185.25.31] (mail) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1C4RQF-0003Ke-00; Mon, 06 Sep 2004 14:53:11 -0700 Received: from katie by newraff.debian.org with local (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1C4RKJ-0005kh-00; Mon, 06 Sep 2004 17:47:03 -0400 From: Joey Hess <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: $Revision: 1.51 $ Subject: Bug#267402: fixed in ddetect 1.05 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sender: Archive Administrator <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Mon, 06 Sep 2004 17:47:03 -0400 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-6.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: X-CrossAssassin-Score: 2 Source: ddetect Source-Version: 1.05 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of ddetect, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: archdetect_1.05_i386.udeb to pool/main/d/ddetect/archdetect_1.05_i386.udeb ddetect_1.05.dsc to pool/main/d/ddetect/ddetect_1.05.dsc ddetect_1.05.tar.gz to pool/main/d/ddetect/ddetect_1.05.tar.gz ethdetect_1.05_all.udeb to pool/main/d/ddetect/ethdetect_1.05_all.udeb hw-detect-full_1.05_all.udeb to pool/main/d/ddetect/hw-detect-full_1.05_all.udeb hw-detect_1.05_i386.udeb to pool/main/d/ddetect/hw-detect_1.05_i386.udeb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached.
