This bug has similar origins with #268815 and even a workaround [1] (with some minor glitches, i.e. untranslated debconf titles) exists in the mentioned bug report. As Christian stated, I'm also reluctant to apply the patch. Maybe it's better to document the problem in errata and work on the issue for post-sarge.
