The debian installer told some missing modules. Frans Pop instructed to ignore this. But these messages are frightening for someone installing at first time. If they were not real errors, they should not be detected this way. The cdrw/dvd is being read. The other confusing issue is about pppoe. Thanks to Frans Pop instructions, I installed the netinst cd first phase to the end. Then, after reboot, went to a second console and called pppoeconf. It should be instructed at the config network screens at least (if not possible to include whole pppoeconf thing at this point). The installer correctly formatted reiserfs the previous fat32 partition. I did not repartitioned, as another linux distro is at same hard disk. Also, included the grub entries at menu.lst but as unknown linux distro. (Conectiva Linux is the most known distro in Brasil). The installer did not included in the fstab the old 1,2 MB floppy drive. Nor I have ideas about the winmodem. The www.kurumin.org linux knoppix derivative may help. It installs the winmodem drivers. Maybe I can discover how to install on debian. It is listed on lspci. Then, the second phase after reboot. After configuring the pppoeconf at a second console (new users will not realize this without instructions), downloaded the packages for desktop. Why I need a MTA in a desktop machine? What is for libpango? What about the strange defoma name? Few instructions for newbies.... The second phase was a pain at xfree86 configuration. The installer did not detected the correct pci entry. It listed video PCI:0:1:0 that did not work. The right is PCI:1:0:0 It is a newbie blocker... The installer did not listed the "abnt2" keyboard. Asked for PC104 and layout "br". confusing for newbies. I still have some keys not working (it is an abnt2 keyboard), but at least are typing this text. The mouse was a real problem, blocking XFree for working. It is a very generic and cheap 3 button wheel mouse. At the installer menu, it was not listed "ps/2", but "/dev/psaux" instead, without explanations for newbies. The explanations for other entries were missing too (if i can remember). The installer wrote /dev/input/mice at XF86Config-4 that did not work. Also, was missing Option "CorePointer" "true" I found in kurumin.org that in order to avoid mouse blocking the X session, the following should be included at section server flags: Section "ServerFlags" Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true" EndSection The nvidia board was a problem. At first try the nv driver did not work. I tried the vesa driver. I know that nvidia real 3d drivers are proprietary and should be downloaded from nvidia site and not included in debian. But it should be told to the newbie at the screen. There were many missing fonts delaying the x session start. The Samsung Syncmaster 753DFX was not detected. And it sold millions in Brasil. The installer wrongly listed frequencies as Horizontal 30-92 Vertical 50-85 The real 753DFX specs are Horizontal 30-70 Vertical 50-160 Allowed resolutions were not correct also. so, after editing the mouse problem, the x session started out of sync... Showstoper for newbies again. Well, after editing /etc/X11/XF86config-4 (Is it the correct file to edit?) the frequencies and resolutions using nano editor, the x session started only after a reboot (??) Finally, kdm appeared in its power and glory. After typing for login kde splash started. "Configuring devices...." .... .... ... Splash screen disappeared after some looong minutes. I had to reboot. (this problem is very frequent. 2 out of 5.) The kde 3.2.3 in debian is dismaing experience. Some windows take 3 to 5 minutes to open!!! I am using conectiva linux 10 with kde 3.2.3 at another partition and it is ligthning fast. so, we have problems in debian+kde... I am not sure where to post these debian kde issues. Please, send guidance. Also, there are many brazilian portuguese translation corrections and debian installer log files that I will send in another messages. Best regards.
