Actually, there is a vmlinuz on prep and chrp machines, and even for oldworld .coff kernels. The vmlinuz symlink (actually it is /boot/vmlinuz, not /vmlinuz) is provided by the 2.4 kernel, both the -chrp and -prep one, and probably by the -pmac also, since it provides the .coff vmlinuz kernel.
