I'll file that separately. I booted with 'install24' and no other options. There were some problems with network setup (see below) but I was able to use the archive on the cdrom to get a bootable system. In the "Select and Install Software" step, I set just picked [*] laptop [ ] standard system but this turned out to be extremly minimal - no pciutils, lynx, rsync or 'file'. I hit another problem when I tried to install the 2.6 kernel from the cdrom, see below. Thanks for the many improvements. [bug] unresolved symbol ALIGN in orinoco module of 2.4.27 installer kernel. ethdetect was unable to load the orinoco_cs module, to get networking working. I tried modprobing from the command line and got this: orinoco.o: unresolved symbol ALIGN Going to the 'no network' option allowed me to proceed through the installation. Post-installation, I was able to upgrade to a 2.6.16 kernel (from the cdrom) and this did support my card. This is an old Netgear 802.11b-only card, it should be supported in 2.4 kernels. # lspcmcia Socket 0 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:04.0) Socket 1 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:04.1) Socket 1 Device 0: [orinoco_cs] (bus ID: 1.0) [bug?] d-i mounts cdrom at a different place than normal system? I'm not sure this is a bug or a feature or just me. When I came to install a 2.6 kernel from the cdrom, I had difficulty getting the cdrom mounted. I had completed the basic installation and had rebooted into a fully running system. When mounting the installer disk under d-i, during installation, the system uses /cdrom as the mount point. When I tried to mount the cdrom, it seemed like the /cdrom location had disappeared and I had to either mount it as /media/cdrom0 or create a symlink /cdrom-> /dev/sr0 (can't recall which and my notes are incomplete). It took a bit of fiddling with 'fdisk -l /dev/hdc' and so on to figure out that I was trying to access the wrong device. Does the installer to use a mountpoint for the cdrom that is consistent with later usage, during normal system operation? This is probably something that only affects 2.4 people with no network, but I thought I should flag it. lsmod output: Module Size Used by dm_snapshot 15324 0 dm_mirror 17236 0 apm 18380 1 usbhid 32128 0 sd_mod 16208 0 usb_storage 69312 0 scsi_mod 122220 2 sd_mod,usb_storage ipv6 217760 16 dm_mod 47892 2 dm_snapshot,dm_mirror loop 14472 0 hostap_cs 53588 0 hostap 99140 1 hostap_cs ieee80211_crypt 5312 1 hostap orinoco_cs 16420 1 orinoco 34452 1 orinoco_cs hermes 7136 2 orinoco_cs,orinoco radio_maestro 6656 0 compat_ioctl32 1184 1 radio_maestro videodev 8640 1 radio_maestro joydev 8864 0 mousedev 10368 1 pcmcia 34844 2 hostap_cs,orinoco_cs tsdev 7200 0 firmware_class 9472 1 pcmcia snd_es1968 25600 1 i2c_piix4 8080 0 shpchp 39200 0 pci_hotplug 24180 1 shpchp gameport 13480 1 snd_es1968 i2c_core 19312 1 i2c_piix4 snd_ac97_codec 82784 1 snd_es1968 snd_ac97_bus 2048 1 snd_ac97_codec snd_pcm 74408 2 snd_es1968,snd_ac97_codec snd_timer 20292 1 snd_pcm snd_page_alloc 9800 2 snd_es1968,snd_pcm snd_mpu401_uart 6592 1 snd_es1968 snd_rawmidi 22048 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 8236 1 snd_rawmidi snd 46080 9 snd_es1968,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device intel_agp 20860 1 soundcore 8672 1 snd agpgart 29232 1 intel_agp evdev 8736 0 yenta_socket 23660 4 rsrc_nonstatic 11840 1 yenta_socket pcmcia_core 37264 3 pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic psmouse 34248 0 serio_raw 6436 0 parport_pc 31472 0 parport 31720 1 parport_pc rtc 11252 0 pcspkr 2948 0 floppy 55628 0 ext3 116008 6 jbd 46932 1 ext3 mbcache 7652 1 ext3 ide_cd 35328 0 cdrom 31888 1 ide_cd ide_disk 14528 8 piix 8932 0 [permanent] generic 4164 0 [permanent] ide_core 111440 5 usb_storage,ide_cd,ide_disk,piix,generic uhci_hcd 26640 0 usbcore 110560 4 usbhid,usb_storage,uhci_hcd processor 21696 0 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
