"tasksel/first=kde-desktop" is only mentioned in the chapter about automated installation (preseed.xml), see http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/de.i386/apbs04.html#preseed-pkgsel A normal user will never find this because he doesn't intend to do a automated installation and thus doesn't need to read that chapter! In generell: there really should be a possiblity to choose between gnome and kde and (maybe) a ressource-friendly alternative in tasksel (or remove gnome completely, but don't offer gnome and not the rest; we are not MS).
