If you have a new desktop, you are almost certainly better off trying the installer for Etch as the Sarge kernel is unlikely to support your hardware very well (if at all). Please try one of the images from: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ But be aware of the current issues listed on: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Today You can avoid the current issues if you use a full Etch RC1 CD or DVD.
