I suggest starting a new thread on this subject. This BR has been closed 
now and so anything added here is not really useful for future reference.
The issue of availability of a shell is more general anyway than just 
rescue mode.

I think we should try to find a "lighter" solution for such basic 
functionality. However, we should definitely keep this in mind as an 
option.
