Comments/Problems:
Chose a basic setup (just desktop and basic system). At "installing
files" stage, got to file 59 out of more than 600, then all activity
ceased (no CD or network activity) and nothing further happened. Tried
two different mirrors; same result.
Desktop is not really "basic", it's about the most complex installation
you can get :-)
It still looks like a mirror problem to me. Trying again now may have
solved it.
OK, I'll check again when I get time.
Anyway, when the system stops responding, please try switching to VT4 (on
PCs this is alt-F4, for Macs probably option-F4 or similar) and check the
log there for any strange messages.
OK, will do. (On my keyboard, option is also labelled alt so it's the
same key.)
If you don't see anything there, try switching to VT2 and check the output
of 'dmesg' and the contents of /var/log/syslog using the editor nano
(anything related to the problem should be near the end).
If possible, send us the syslog (gzipped!).
That'll be a bit hard since at that point I'm not installed so I have to
switch back to OSX to access email. There's probably a way, but I don't
know enough Linux yet...
You can also check what processes are running using the 'ps' command. The
last 6 or so should include the ones causing the problem.
OK, thanks.
Cheers, Mike.
Cheers,
FJP
