one of the guys on the Debian mailing list suggested that I respond to the post on this mailing list and report my results.
The thread I had linked to in my earlier post suggested installing Linux with the pci=noapci boot option. I read the help documentation for the Debian installer and it just happened to use the "no pci" option as its example of a boot option. (Perhaps that indicates this is a common problem?) In the help documentation the option was slightly different. I could successfully install Debian Lenny when I used the "pci=off" boot option.
