I installed rhythmbox and gstreamer was pulled along. I then deinstalled
all gstreamer audiosink packages except for gstreamer-esd, since this is
the only one my system needs.
When I finally started rhythmbox, it wouldn't play, but would just show
up a message box with an error which incidentally I don't remember, but
was caused by the fact that gstreamer was configured to use the oss
audiosink (you can reproduce the error by installing the gstreamer
packages as above).
Ideally, gstreamer should be able to figure out the most appropriate
audiosink for itself, especially under gnome, where esd will be enabled
frequently. End users usually don't know (and shouldn't have to know)
about the subtleties involving oss, esd, alsa, arts, etc, but
this autoconfiguration might be a little too much to ask for right now.
For this bug I'm just proposing that the default gstreamer configuration
should reflect the installed backends, and maybe prioritize esd over
oss. The current failure to do this, coupled with Bug#244449, is a major
usability failure of the package, IMHO.
