I get htis while installing:

Setting up python (2.3.4-5) ...
syntax error in status file: at /usr/sbin/install-docs line 362, <S>
line 1.
dpkg: error processing python (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255
 Errors were encountered while processing:
  python
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I'm quite sure that there's a corrupt file there somewhere, but I cannot
see which file /usr/sbin/install-docs looks at...

look at the postinst of the python package, not python2.3. It installs
fine for me. Next time, please use your real name for submitting bug
reports.
