Package: procps
Version: all (include 3.2.4)
When I invoke `top -v' from an ordinary shell promt it prints
version and usage information, and exit with *not zero* return value.
Here is a transcript:
[procps-3.2.4]$ ./top -v
top: procps version 3.2.4
usage: top -hv | -bcisS -d delay -n iterations [-u user | -U user] -p pid
[,pid ...]
[procps-3.2.4]$ echo $?
1
I suggest that the return value be corrected.
It is common issue and related to source code only.
