crypt does not support SunOS (uname -a: 5.6 Generic_105181-31)
crypt(1) as advertised in the manual. The error message is:

    $ mcrypt -d -a des --keymode pkdes --bare \
      --noiv -k test sunos.txt.crypt > sunos.txt
    Warning: It is insecure to specify keywords in the command line
    mcrypt: Encrypted data will not be read from a terminal.
    Redirect the input instead.
    Use the --help parameter for more help.

The manual page reads:

EXAMPLES

       For mcrypt to be compatible with the solaris des(1), the
       following parame- ters are needed: "mcrypt -a des --keymode
       pkdes --bare --noiv filename".

Attached test file from SunOS made like this:

        $ echo test  > sunos.txt
        $ crypt test < sunos.txt > sunos.txt.crypt

The attached file can be decrypted either with the provided
/usr/bin/crypt shell script (emulation of the old unix crypt), or by
using the second example from the man-page:

       For mcrypt to be compatible with the unix crypt(1), the
       following parameters are needed: "mcrypt -a enigma --keymode
       scrypt --bare filename".

What you have is probably not a des file, but an old unix crypt file.

However I'm not a big encryption guru, so if you are sure that the
crypt command on sunos create des files, please give me some
documentation which shows that (when you reopen the bug). I think,
that on a commercial unix it is not a big surprise, if the crypt
command crypts with the old unix crypt algorithm, what is called
enigma in mcrypt.

Thanks for your report,
Gergely
