Hello,
trying to insert an Audio CD on a system without hal doesn't trigger
anything. Only if I launch rhythmbox from a terminal you can see
where the problem originates. The following lines are printed as soon
as I launch rhythmbox and no CD is inserted:

Thus, installing hal solved the problem. There's no mention of this
dependency in the Description field or in any documentation (Debian or
upstream help).
Solution: adding hal to Recommends and a note into the README.Debian
as below, I see here the same situation as avahi-daemon,
i.e. something which is not strictly necessary for all users, but
useful.
