Incidentally, the description of network preferences in the man page
does not match what I see in the gaim Preferences Tool. If I manually
edit ~/.gaim/prefs.xml for a socks5 proxy the file ~/.gaim/prefs.xml
is overwritten with:

I see no way to specify a proxy from the gaim Tools. My Gnome Network
Proxy Preferences are manually configured as:
HTTP 127.0.0.1:8118
HTTPS 127.0.0.1:8118
Socks 127.0.0.1:1080
Will gaim use any of those? It is hard for me to see because those
are actually encrypted connections to third party proxy servers.
I'm running gnome-panel 2.14.3-2.
