Hello,
the battery status applet provides a context-menu entry entitled
'Suspend Computer'.
If the user has an apm-aware kernel and the apmd package installed
without any other changes, this option will report "The Suspend command
'/usr/bin/apm -s' was unsuccessful."
This is due to bug #134595, namely, only root can suspend the computer
by default. Setuid'ing /usr/bin/apm is one way of fixing this.
Now I think that gnome-panel should perhaps report more useful error
messages, but this but really depends on the aformentioned #134595 and
what might happen to make users calling /usr/bin/apm possible.

Closing for testing as g-p-m has super-seeded battstat and suspending
should work for normal users now.
