I haven't been able to find any way to get ntpdate to run without this
error message. The same error appears in my syslog when I do
/etc/init.d/ntpdate start.

When ntpd is running there are no obvious error messages in the logs, but
ntpd also doesn't seem to want to update my clock to the correct time.

ntp.netreach.net is theoretically the ntp server I should be using, but
(as you can see above) it doesn't seem to make any difference whether I
use that or pool. I just included localhost (which isn't supposed to be
a server at all) to demonstrate that the error doesn't seem to be
related to whether there's a valid server at the other end or not.
