Package: fam
Version: 2.7.0-5
I tried to install fam (because it is included in gnome-desktop-environment)
from a stable (woody server) to a unstable one (sid workstation) through some
home made rsync and ssh scripts. The purpose is to install my clients in a
unattended way without any user interaction.
I isolated a very strange problem.
When I try to install fam to ssh the installation process, in fact the
/var/lib/dpkg/info/fam.postinst script never stops since the invoke.rc-d
script never stops since famd never stops.
Here is a copy of screen output:
# ssh bouleau02 apt-get install fam

This never stops. When I get to the bouleau02 workstation and try to see what
processes are working I can see this (irrelevant information were removed from
the output of `ps -ef xf' :
15286 1 0 Ss 0:00 apt-get install fam
15301 15286 1 S 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/dpkg --configure fam
15302 15301 0 S 0:00 \_ /bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/fam.postinst
configure
15304 15302 0 S 0:00 \_ /bin/sh /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d fam start
15320 15304 0 S 0:00 \_ /bin/sh /etc/init.d/fam start
15322 15320 37 R 0:14 \_ /usr/sbin/famd -T 0
If I kill the famd process then all finish well.
All is also well done without any problems when I force the pseudo tty
allocation of ssh with this command:
# ssh -t bouleau02 apt-get install fam

Changes:
fam (2.7.0-13) unstable; urgency=low
.
* In the fam init script, redirect /dev/null to stdin when starting famd
to avoid faulty if-started-by-inetd heuristic in famd when running
through ssh remote command execution (closes: #260516, #284998)
* Apply patch from Giuseppe Sacco to catch a seemingly impossible
runtime condition (closes: #375967)
