Package: xscreensaver
Version: 4.16-1
Severity: normal
I've been using xscreensaver for a while, and I've noticed the following
on quite a few occasions: the screensaver doesn't kick in until you try
to use the computer.
Say I'm using my computer, and I look away for a few minutes. As soon
as I look back at my computer and try using it (usually by moving the
mouse) then the screensaver takes action. It slowly fades into the
screensaver (after I've moved the mouse!) then gives control back to the
user. I have seen this many times; too many to be coincidence.
As a developer of an unrelated software product, I estimate there are
up to three bugs:
1. When going into screensaver mode xscreensaver doesn't check for user
input. This means several seconds without any check.
2. When waiting to go into screensaver mode xscreensaver doesn't poll
often enough. Of course moving the mouse triggers a poll for some
reason, and this causes the screensaver to activate.
3. When screensaver mode is activated by user inactivity, xscreensaver
doesn't check to see if the most recent event constitutes activity.
Maybe the poll is triggered before the event happens, but if possible
you should check for this case.
Fixing either #1 or #3 should fix the problem. #2 is just an incidental
problem (xscreensaver can poll as often as it wants as far as I'm
concerned, so long as its priority is low).
