Package: general
Severity: wishlist
This message made by several programs is misleading:
# ed /etc/fonts/conf.d/61-traditional.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/61-traditional.conf: No such file or directory
q
# ls /etc/fonts/conf.d/61-traditional.conf
ls: /etc/fonts/conf.d/61-traditional.conf: No such file or directory
It should be just "no such file" as indeed there is such a directory:
# ls -d /etc/fonts/conf.d/
/etc/fonts/conf.d/
It must be some C library message. Please reassign this bug for me.

There is nothing wrong with the behaviour of ed.
ed attempted to open the file you specified and got ENOENT. It would
be wrong of a supposedly simple and reliable tool like ed to do
anything more complicated (like attempting to discover things about
intermediate directories). If you want emacs you know where to find
it.
Therefore, ed correctly reported strerror(ENOENT). strerror(ENOENT)
is "No such file or directory" because the thing which does not exist
might be a file or an intermediate directory. This message has been
in use for decades and there would be no excuse for changing it.
Please do not reopen this bug.
Ian.
