After generating the .deb packages with make-vmpkg from the file
VMware-server-1.0.4-56528.tar.gz, I could not find the script
/usr/bin/vmware in any of the packages:

$ make-vmpkg VMware-server-1.0.4-56528.tar.gz
[...]
$ for f in vmware-server/*.deb; do dpkg --contents $f; done | grep bin/vmware
- -rwxr-xr-x root/root     72324 2007-11-19 07:36 ./usr/bin/vmware-authtrusted
- -rwxr-xr-x root/root     23333 2007-09-07 00:00 ./usr/bin/vmware-cmd
- -rwxr-xr-x root/root    488308 2007-11-19 07:36 ./usr/bin/vmware-loop
- -rwxr-xr-x root/root     25488 2007-09-07 00:00 ./usr/bin/vmware-mount.pl
- -rwsr-xr-x root/root     10420 2007-11-19 07:36 ./usr/bin/vmware-ping
- -rwxr-xr-x root/root    715672 2007-11-19 07:36 ./usr/bin/vmware-vdiskmanager
- -rwxr-xr-x root/root   1584472 2007-11-19 07:36
./usr/lib/vmware-server/bin/vmware-remotemks
- -rwsr-xr-x root/root   4369636 2007-11-19 07:36
./usr/lib/vmware-server/bin/vmware-vmx
- -rwsr-xr-x root/root    160844 2007-11-19 07:36 ./usr/sbin/vmware-authd
- -rwxr-xr-x root/root   2775516 2007-11-19 07:36 ./usr/sbin/vmware-serverd

Please install the bin/vmware wrapper script to /usr/bin/vmware, just
as vmware-install.pl does it.

Regards,
  Bastian

this is by design. one should be able to install both vmware
workstation and the vmware server console without conflict.

you need to download the "VMware Server Linux client package" from
vmware.com and generate the vmware-server-console package. that version
differs slightly from the integrated console vmware ships in the server
package in that the binary is called /usr/bin/vmware-server-console.

splitting vmware-server-console from vmware-server also means you save
roughly 30 MB + additional dependencies that aren't needed on headless
machines running vmware server.

$ cat /usr/bin/make-vmpkg
[...]
    'server' : {
        'srcpkg':       'vmware',
        'filename':     'VMware-server-([0-9.-]+)\.tar\.gz',
        'version':      ('1.0.4.56528',),
        'md5sum':       '60ec55cd66b77fb202d88bee79baebdf',
    },

    'server-console' : {
        'srcpkg':       'vmware',
        'filename':     'VMware-server-console-([0-9.-]+)\.tar\.gz',
        'version':      ('1.0.4.56528',),
        'md5sum':       '30c41c0b08b31e45e1e176a927f22606',
    },
[...]

it's not necessary to imitate every nuance of vmware's install scripts.
