I used to scan from the Gnome Desktop, through Gimp with either QuiteInsane, 
XSane or xsaneimage. 
It has recently been causing a complete failure of X11, abruptly killing the 
session without scanning anything. 
I then tried to reproduce the problem purely with command line interface, with 
no more result (at least the session is not killed):
