The 'most' manual describes numeric command arguments
like so:
COMMAND USAGE
The commands take effect immediately; it is not necessary to
type a
carriage return.
In the following commands, i is a numerical argument (1 by
default).
SPACE, CTRL-D, NEXT_SCREEN
Display another windowful, or jump i windowfuls if i is
speci-
fied.
...but it doesn't say the 'i' argument is postfix, that is, the
user has to type the number first, THEN the command key.
Suggest replacing the first two paragraphs with something like:
Some commands have an optional numeric argument 'i',
entered before the command. If not given, the
default value of 'i' is 1.
Commands take effect immediately; typing a RETURN after isn't
necessary or correct. (Besides, RETURN itself is a command.)
Example: to go down one line, press the DOWN_ARROW key.
To go down 20 lines, press '2' then '0' then the DOWN_ARROW key.
Notes on my revision:
1) 'numeric' instead of 'numerical'.
2) The paragraph about command arguments should be first,
because the arguments themselves come first.
3) 'typing return' instead of 'type a carriage return'.
4) The present man page says typing a RETURN isn't necessary, but
it doesn't tell the user he shouldn't do it. So I added
the bit about it being incorrect. Perhaps there's a more
succinct way to say that though.
5) Postfix is unusual and needs an example.

These issues with the man pages have been reviewed by JED. Some changes
have been accepted into the new upstream version, some have not. I'm
going to close this at this point either way.
