Package: mythtv-backend
Version: 0.20.2-0.2
Severity: normal
I recently tripped over a bug identical to the one described in the
following thread:
http://www.mailinglistarchive.com/mythtv-dev%40mythtv.org/msg01009.html
I can confirm that, as Gervase Markham suspected, it has to do with
giving the wrong IP address to mythtv-setup. In my case, the problem
turned out to be that I'd typed "192.168.123" instead of "192.168.2.123"
as my IP address.
Could I suggest that the "host address backend setup" page (the first
page in the "general" series in mythtv-setup) is redesigned so that:
a) A checkbox marked "this computer is the master server" goes before
the master server options, and is ticked by default. When this is
ticked, the master server options are hidden.
b) When the user clicks "next" from this menu, both IP addresses are
checked to see if they're valid numeric addresses (or that
gethostbyname() returns a non-null value if host names are allowed).
If not, a message is displayed saying "<invalid address> is not a
valid IP address. Are you sure you want to use it?".
Although neither of these changes would make the problems we encountered
impossible, it would make it harder to blunder into them without
thinking.

I see you reported a bug against the package mythtv-backend, which isn't a
debian official package (or, at least, isn't in debian package archives)
If you downloaded the package form debian-multimedia.org please send your
bug report to Christian Marillat ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), as states the
homepage: "If you find some broken dependencies or bugs in these packages,
tell me and don't report bugs to the BTS."
If you instead installed the package from some other source (eg,
upstream site), "dpkg -s mythtv-backend" may help you to find the maintainer
(or, at least, someone to blame) :)
ciao
