Package: exim
Version: 3.32-2
Severity: important
I have a dialup machine which has a dynamic IP. When the exim config
program runs, it has an option number 2 which says in its description:
"This is probably what you want for a dialup system."
The problem is, unless your machines hostname is externally resolvable
(very unlikely unless your machine hostname is on dyndns), this will
fail as shown below...
---
SMTP error from remote mailer after MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> SIZE=1529:
host vision.doa.org [209.58.141.100]: 501 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... Sender
domain must exist
---
Firstly, the 'FROM' line here should contain the From line in the email
address, since this is likely to be the only hostname exim knows about
which is resolvable on the outside world.
I have lodged this bug with an important severity, due to the fact that
for dialup users or anyone with dynamic IP, the default installation will
not work at all, and even if the remote servers do allow from unresolvable
domains, it is still A Bad Thing(tm) to use an internal hostname to
identify yourself to an external host.

The exim package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.
For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/420191 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
