Package: exim
Version: 3.36-11
Severity: normal

Smarthost relaying requiring proper authentication is not exactly
uncommon, but requires manual mucking about in exim.conf after running
eximconfig. This is really dumb. I can't believe I wasted an afternoon
figuring this out.

It would be nice if the sequence of questions (in /usr/sbin/eximconfig
near line 324) was:
Which machine will act as the smarthost and handle outgoing mail?
What is your username at this smarthost (blank for no authentication) ?
(if username) What is your password at this smarthost?

However, I recognize that writing perl code to auto-generate the
password section will take some time. As a kludge, eximconfig could
say
Which machine will act as the smarthost and handle outgoing mail?
WARNING: If your smarthost requires authentication you will
have to add username and password to your configuration
manually. Instructions are in the remote_smtp section of exim.conf.

If you are not inspired to start working on the first solution or some
compromise right away, please take thirty seconds to add the kludge.
It would be a single print statement on line 334 and would save some
other poor schmuck some time.

Thanks for your sixty seconds.

Rob

The exim package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/420191 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
