As discussed with maintainer by private mail, a useful patch to Alpine
exists at
http://files.derickrethans.nl/patches/alpine-fancy-thread-interface-2007-04-03.diff.txt

This adds an additional sort option which sorts threads in a much saner
manner.

Further details exist at http://derickrethans.nl/patching_alpine.php

The patch author has been contacted to confirm that he is willing to
release this patch under the Alpine license.

This bug can be closed. Alpine now has a configuration setting which
makes the threading behaviour identical to that provided by this patch
("thread sorts by arrival").

Thanks for considering it anyway.
