screen turns to black on boot and the boot process appears to halt after some
time of hd-led flashes.
later (after i remove "splash vga=791" from the kernel command line)...
i see at the system log :
[ 3285.122496] splashy[8282]: segfault at c ip b7ec527d sp bfc0de20 error 4 in
libsplashy.so.1.0.0[b7ec3000+5000]
[ 3288.693082] splashy[8284]: segfault at c ip b7eef27d sp bf836240 error 4 in
libsplashy.so.1.0.0[b7eed000+5000]
testing "splashy test" return this seg-fault too.
i try to test after a boot with no "splash" in the /proc/cmdline
so i get :
Splashy ERROR: libsplashy: Framebuffer is not configured properly please see
http://tinyurl.com/339h67
Splashy ERROR: Couldn't splashy_start_splashy(). Error -2
this issue seems similar to bug#458959.

inserting radeonfb into initrd (with mkinitramfs) and loading it with
"video=radeonfb" helped :-)
i also noticed (on the internet...forums and bugzillas) that kernel
2.6.25/26 has issues with vesafb
and that they are working on it :-)
let's close this one :-)
