(Note: this _not_ related to #223751, I'm not asking IDEA to be included,
I'm just suggesting some more documentation could be appropiate)
Please add this (small) addition to FAQ item "3.3) How do I include support
for RSA and IDEA?" (/usr/share/doc/gnupg/faq.html.gz and FAQ.gz)
Instead of
" Compilation directives are in the headers of these files. You will
then need to add the following line to your ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf or
~/.gnupg/options file:"
" Compilation directives are in the headers of these files. You will
then need to copy the idea module to /usr/lib/gnupg (if you do not
recompile gnupg completely including this extension) and add the
following line to your ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf or ~/.gnupg/options file:
"
(notice that the FAQ, nor the manpages, say were modules are expected to be
found, or at least I have not found it)
It could be also be worthwhile to add the following to README.Debian
(BTW, I find the title below better than "Debian has no IDEA" :-)
"
Debian does not include IDEA
----------------------------
Debian cannot include the IDEA module in the Gnupg package due to patent
issues, no Debian packages will be provided by the project including this
algorithm due to its world-wide nature (the patent covers a number of
countries, see below). If you need IDEA for decrypting please read the FAQ
(item ' How do I include support for RSA and IDEA?'). For more information
also please read http://www.gnupg.org/(en)/why-not-idea.html
Notice that you might be able to find this plugin compiled for Gnupg in
other distributions (in the gnupg-idea-plugin or gpgaddon RPM packages for
example). Debian-derived distributions _might_ include the IDEA plugin if
they are used under the non-profit purposes that are excluded by the
patent.
About IDEA:
Patented by Ascom Systec Ltd. of CH-5506 Maegenwil. Only freely usable
for certain non-profit purpose:
This software product contains the IDEA algorithm as described and claimed
in US patent 5,214,703, EPO patent 0482154 (covering Austria, France,
Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK),
and Japanese patent application 508119/1991, "Device for the conversion of
a digital block and use of same" (hereinafter referred to as "the
algorithm"). Any use of the algorithm for commercial purposes is thus
subject to a license from Ascom Systec Ltd. of CH-5506 Maegenwil
(Switzerland), being the patentee and sole owner of all rights, including
the trademark IDEA."
Notice that I don't use IDEA but, for some reason (I don't really know why
but I have not investigated either), encrypted messages (such as those
generated by CA bots after key signing parties) sent using my old PGP keys
are signed with IDEA, and I cannot decrypt them with our current PGP
version (since the format is newer) nor with GPG (unless I load up the IDEA
module).

Javi
