Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686
Version: 2.6.8-13
Severity: important

When I plug in a LaCie 40Gb USB 2.0 disk, which is a SCSI disk
transported over USB, the entire USB subsystem seems to freeze.
Specifically, cat /proc/bus/usb/devices never exits,
usbview never puts up its window, etc.
These process are unkillable via
sudo kill -9 NNNNN.

On the initial plug-in, I see this in /var/log/syslog:
Mar 14 22:32:46 gpk kernel: usb 2-2.1: new full speed USB device using address 5
Mar 14 22:32:47 gpk kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Mar 14 22:32:47 gpk usb.agent[30158]: usb-storage: already loaded

(USB storage is already loaded because I plugged in a different
disk earlier, and it worked very nicely.)

No disk appears in /dev (using udev).

Unplugging the disk does not cause any lines to appear in
/var/log/syslog, nor does plugging it in again.

Here are some possibly relevant lines from ps -e -f:

Version: 2.6.8-99+rm

You reported a bug against the Linux kernel (version 2.6.8) that was
shipped with Debian 3.1 (sarge). Since Debian 3.1 is no longer
supported and the kernel has changed so much that it would be very
difficult to verify every outstanding bug from 2.6.8, I'm hereby
closing your bug report.

If you still see this issue with the kernel from the upcoming release
of Debian (lenny, version 5.0), then please me know and I'll be happy
to reopen this bug report.

Thanks.
