Hello,
I had a problem with playback so I tried to upgrade to newer mplayer.
However, the only thing that I can tell for sure after the upgrade is
that there is a large preformance gap between 1.0~rc2-8+lenny1 and 1.0~rc2-14.
The same H.264+AAC file would play at 60%-70% cpu with the older release
and 90%-100%+ (unusable) with the newer release on the same system.

FFMpeg-debian compiling flags were improved; so
I did some benchmarks this morning
I tested mplayer SVN 27354 (compiled without forcing configure, that is, with
'gcc -O4 -march=native -mtune=native -pipe -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer')
versus mplayer 1.0~rc2-16 in Debian (that is compiled with ./configure
--enable-debug , so it uses 'gcc -O2 ' - but do not forget that
ffmpeg libraries are shared linked, and compiled on their own package)
I tested on some sample files from http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/
the results seems to be that there is no noticeable difference in speed
more precisely, I tested speed on the following files

http://www.flashingtwelve.brickfilms.com/TTC/data/Mirko_The_Artist.ogg
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/Matroska/x264_no-b-frames.mkv

and other files I have here, with fourcc =
mp4v , mp4v from divx4, H264 , WMV3 , WMV1
the only difference is in /MPEG2/dvd.mpeg , were mplayer/SVN uses
ffmpeg , that is faster; but if I add '-vc ffmpeg2' then the speed
of mplayer/debian is the same
