--- Begin Message ---Package: rdiff-backup Version: 1.1.5-4 Severity: grave Just to summarize, so nobody else gets bitten: The maintainer has badly screwed up and included an unsupported experimental version (1.1.5) in etch (stable). This version is not compatible with the current upstream stable (1.0.5) or development (1.1.15) versions of rdiff-backup. This means you cannot back up a Debian testing machine, a machine with a different Linux distro or a machine with a different OS to from/to a Debain stable machine if you install the rdiff-backup package from Debian etch. You may also find that you cannot access your old backups made with etch when you upgrade to lenny. So while the maintainer is bitching around, refuses to clean up his own mess and generally damages the reputation of Debian, I suggest installing the 1.1.15 version from the original site here: http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/ Note that you cannot install the package from lenny, since it requires Python 2.5 for some reason. The upstream 1.1.15 package is happy with Python 2.4. and rdiff-backup 1.1.15 installs cleanly on etch with it. You need the Python and librsync header files (python-dev, librsync-dev) but that is basically it. I recommend installing with prefix /usr/local as described in the README and to lock rdiff-backup in the uninstalled state in the Debian package manager. Arno -- Arno Wagner, Dipl.
