Package: rdiff-backup
Version: 1.1.9-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

rdiff-backup upstream has the habit of changing the network protocol
once in a while without caring much for compatibility. This has in the
past more than once made it impossible to back up a host running
Debian unstable to a host running Debian stable and vice versa,
forcing a lot of unnecessary backporting and updating on production
systems.

rdiff-backup being written in pythion does not make backporting and
forwardporting any easier.

Additionally, Debian stable, unstable and testing all three contain an
upstream _development_ version since late 2005. There are no Debian
packages available of a stable upstream version of rdiff-backup.

I would like to ask to have multiple rdiff-backup packages in Debian
so that interoperability between different Debian OSses and even
between non-Debian and Debian OSses can be achieved. Not even being
compatible between Debian stable and unstable is not acceptable, IMO.

Please advise how you intend to address this issue which comes up
repeatedly once in a while.

This bug is being filed to prepare a case for the tech ctte.

Greetings
Marc
