The compiler should be run with the -g flag to get debug info (policy 10.1).

The values provided by dpkg-buildpackage for CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS include
-g, so the packages include debug information (if the nostrip option is
used anyway).

If you call debian/rules directly you can set CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS to
include -g to have debug information.
