Package: fakeroot
Version: 1.5.8
Severity: normal
We are using fakeroot in a build system that ultimately creates a small
squashfs image for the embedded devices. fakeroot is used to allow all
users to build this system without having root access in any form.
In about 50% of the cases (can be larger), the build fails because a
file that has been stored in the target root directory is recognised as
a link instead of a kernel module.
The error is always pretty consistent: a kernel module:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] flashfs]$ fakeroot -i ../fakeroot.env ls -al
lib/modules/2.6.16-fpga1/kernel/drivers/fpga/nww.ko
ls: cannot read symbolic link
lib/modules/2.6.16-fpga1/kernel/drivers/fpga/nww.ko: Invalid argument
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6727 May 3 09:04
lib/modules/2.6.16-fpga1/kernel/drivers/fpga/nww.ko
[EMAIL PROTECTED] flashfs]$ ls -al
lib/modules/2.6.16-fpga1/kernel/drivers/fpga/nww.ko
-rw-r--r-- 1 marc firmware 6727 May 3 09:04
lib/modules/2.6.16-fpga1/kernel/drivers/fpga/nww.ko
The kernel module is just copied in the directory using install
(previously cp). When not using the fakerootdb, the file is correctly
recognised as a normal file. The copy or install has been done using
fakeroot or without fakeroot, no real change is to be seen.
fakeroot -i
/users/firmware/mleeman/no_backup/build-h_dguc.2.6.nightly-20060504-060003/fakeroot.env
-s
/users/firmware/mleeman/no_backup/build-h_dguc.2.6.nightly-20060504-060003/fakeroot.env
install -m 644
/users/firmware/mleeman/no_backup/build-h_dguc.2.6.nightly-20060504-060003/v-h_dguc.2.6.nightly/flashfs/nww.ko
/users/firmware/mleeman/no_backup/build-h_dguc.2.6.nightly-20060504-060003/flashfs//lib/modules/2.6.16-fpga1/kernel/drivers/fpga/
Running the build again, might result in success or again in failure,
often resulting in 5 consecutive builds failing due to this.
I've not yet seen any pattern in it. This behaviour has been seen in
amd64, ppc and i386 architectures.
ii fakeroot 1.5.8 Gives
a fake root environment
I've been trying several things (not fakeroot) for more than half a year
now, but nothing seems to alleviate the problem. The only effect I seem
to notice (for what it is worth) is that a slower machine has less
problems with this problem than a fast one; but since it's another arch,
it's difficult to compare.
