killall -9 only helps sometimes. the kernel does a atapi reset when
cdrecord crashes. with cdrecord_2.0+a30.pre1-1_i386.deb and older
versions the drive works fine!!

The 2.6.8 kernel is no longer supported by Debian so I'm closing
your bug report. Please try the 2.6.26 kernel from Debian lenny.
