Bug was discovered by use of vnstat.  This may or may not be a kernel bug, but 
the author of vnstat has indicated it is lower-level than his application.

The 2.6.8 kernel is no longer supported by Debian so I'm closing
your bug report.  Please try the 2.6.26 kernel from Debian lenny.
