Package: coreutils
Version: 6.10-6
Severity: normal
I got the shock of my life when I found that even with two separae users logged
under two
virtual terminals (X.org, KDE 4, from experimental), users does NOT report ANY
users logged in
on the system. This is when running "users" command from konsole.
So, I go to tty1, log in user1, user2 from tty2, user3 from tty3, etc. and
userX from X.
I try running the "users" command from both X and each tty separately, and
find that
"users" reports all users logged in from ttys; but not those loggedin on X.
Is there any possibility that the system r00ted? There is nothing suspicious so
far;
but reason I ran users was that the system is too swappy with 2 users on X; but
I have only
512 megs of RAM.
And I run firehol with the default "client-all.conf" file in
/etc/firehol/firehol.conf. So,
not easy to get cracked; unless something smart has happend. And I am on a
dynamic IP; but the
system is connected most of time. I am no security expert, so any questions to
rule out /confirm
a cracked system is welcome.
PS:- Is there is a security issue here?

That is normal; the GUI logins do not typically create utmp entries. If
you want them to, you can take it up with those packages. "xterm" does
create utmp entries, so you should see something if you use that
terminal program.
