Hello,
On a mostly fresh install of woody, using the latest kernel image (2.4.18-1)
running on a fairly simple box (my test system) consisting of one IDE root
disk, iostat and sar aren't reporting any disk activity at all.
I've tried running the following test code:
perl -e '$i=1; while ($i++) {print "$i\n";}'
and redirecting it's output to the disk, but both "sar -b" and iostat, sampling
every second, aren't showing any write activity whatsoever. I'll kill the
process after a few minutes (after it's generated 200-300MB) and run "sync"
just to be absolutely sure it's commited to disk... sar and iostat are showing
absolutely no activity for that whole time. I've tar'ed up the whole of /usr
to disk... no read nor write activity at all...
Just for my own sanity ;-), I've run the same experiment on a RedHat 9 setup,
and it's showing heavy activity just as expected.
..Yves
