Package: phpmyadmin
Version: 4:3.1.2-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

since I updated to phpmyadmin from squeeze, I'm no longer able to talk
to to a mysql-4.0 server. (Connection to this ancient remote server is tunneled
via ssh to localhost:13306, phpmyadmin is running on the local machine
connecting to localhost:13306.)

The error message says:

SET NAMES 'utf8' COLLATE 'utf8_unicode_ci';

#1193 - Unknown system variable 'NAMES'

Yes, phpMyAdmin 3.x requires MySQL 5 or newer. If you need support for
older versions, use 2.11.x branch, either from stable or from upstream
tarballs.
