Package: kernel-package
Version: 11.015
Severity: important

Maybe that is a grave bug but I start with important as I do not know.

The make-kpkg will not create a .deb package anymore. The build of the
module packages work fine.

I use to build the kernel from a fresh plain vanilla kernel. Before I do
any make-kpkg I copy a old configuration to .config in the main
directory of the kernel. Then I use the following to build the kernel:
 make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --revision mykernel.36 --bzimage --added_patches
"" --added-modules "cdfs,nvidia-kernel" --config menuconfig configure
 make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --revision mykernel.36 --bzimage --added_patches
"" --added-modules "cdfs,nvidia-kernel" --config menuconfig binary-arch
 fakeroot make-kpkg --revision mykernel.36 --bzimage --added_patches ""
--added-modules "cdfs,nvidia-kernel" --config menuconfig modules_image

Note that the modules have to be build with fakeroot as it dosn't work
without in any version I tested.

Hi,

As you noticed, this is not a bug: in order to run the optional
target menuconfig, you need to make sure that the optional dependencies
are present. This is true for _any_ optional part of the kernel
 build.

Making all optional build dependencies of the kernel into
dependencies of the kernel-package is a non-starter, since that would
mean people would have to install a load of unncessary packages (some
people prefer gconfig or xconfig; for example).
