Package: libfreetype6
Version: 2.1.10-1
Severity: important

As of a couple of weeks ago, most of the PDF files I try to view in
xpdf, evince, or gv either garble the text or display a blank page.
I see letters that appear to be latin characters, but they're all
drawn in the wrong place and no words are detectable.

Two PDF files which exhibit the problem are
http://online.wr.usgs.gov/calendar/jul05flyer.pdf (fairly short) or
http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/bulletin/b2195/b2195.pdf (quite long,
click on a random page from the middle, e.g. "Anorthosite").

A screenshot from the latter pdf is at:
http://shallowsky.com/tmp/xpdf-sid.jpg
(is it kosher to attach a screenshot in mail to the deb bug system?)

A sarge machine displays these PDFs correctly, but upgrading sarge
to the freetype version from sid causes the same problems I see in sid.

I'm happy to say that this appears to be fixed with the version of freetype
in unstable.  I'm presuming that it's also fixed with the version in lenny;
if not, please let me know.

Tested using evince + freetype 2.3.9 and the second of the reference pdfs,
<http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/bulletin/b2195/b2195.pdf>. The first pdf and
the xpdf screenshot are no longer available on the web, but the other pdf
doesn't show any of the serious font problems you described, so let's call
it good.

(Yes, for this reason it's preferable to attach any screenshots and test
cases to your mails to the BTS, since sometimes bugs will go several years
and several package maintainers before they're resolved. :( )
