It would be nice to be able to start mtr without a hostname, ie. from a
windowmanager menu, and have it just sit there and wait for a
hostname.  (running "mtr localhost" is a hack workaround, since it
still pings when you do that...)

Modern versions of mtr default to pinging localhost as if you'd run "mtr
localhost".
